81. That’s the number of sheep that we sheared last Saturday. It’s also equal to the number of times I’ve grabbed my back in pain this week. Seriously, we couldn’t have done it without a lot of help. Thanks to Danny, our shearer from Kansas, and all the folks that trimmed hooves, wrangled sheep, and skirted wool: Lisa B, Cyrena, Shelby, Caleb, and Will.

Lisa herds one of the last few sheep remaining to be sheared

The other big helper was our new working equipment. Shelby welded it up based on my specs, and it performed pretty well in its maiden voyage. He kept thinking of things to tweak while we were using it to gather and hold the sheep for shearing. I’m excited about being able to use it next summer out in the pasture. It’s a modular unit that breaks down for easy transport and can be assembled anywhere in about 10 minutes.

We’re enjoying the big thaw here and are hoping that cold spell from last week turns out to be the longest of the season.
