Ladies and Gentlemen, Please Stay Tuned

January 4, 2011

This just in from our friends at the National Weather Service office in SNorman:

This is called a “special weather statement.” It sounds even more *special* if you read it in the Church Lady’s voice.

Figures. We’re shearing on Saturday, and the weather goes north starting Saturday night. We could move shearing (we did last year because of the Christmas Eve blizzard), but it becomes really difficult to reschedule the shearer and all the helpers. It looks like there won’t be huge amounts of precipitation with this storm front, and we have more than enough shelter, so I think we will go ahead.

You know one of the really nice things about feeding free-choice hay this time of year? Hay is a warming feed. As the sheep digest (mechanically and chemically) all that fiber, it releases heat, which helps keep them warm. We also feed whole corn during gestation and lactation as a source of readily available energy to the pregnant/nursing ewes, so the combo of corn and hay helps them manufacture heat even when it’s really cold outside.

Once we are through next week, we’ll be through the highest risk period. So, next week–lots of TLC for the pregos!

I think you should record yourself reading this in the Church Lady’s voice and post it for us to hear. 🙂

Best of all, no skirting wool during shearing, and no nephew riding the poor ewes like they are horses. Can’t wait to try out the new sorting chutes, and see if we can go all “Temple Grandin” this year. Shearing in the morning will help too. It promises to be the easiest best shearing yet!
